Burgers"Leonora,"whichwastohavesuchaninfluenceuponEnglishliterature(itwasthefoundationofmuchofSirWalterScottspoetry),wastranslatedfromtheGermanbyWilliamTaylorofNorwichin1790andprintedintheMonthlyMagazineinMarch,1796.Scottatoncemadearivalversion.Theotherfinesong,intheAprilMonthlyMagazine,was"TheLassofFairWone."
ThementionoftheStatutedeContumeliaseemstorefertothe"LinesComposedinaConcert-Room,"whichwerefirstprintedintheMorningPost,September24,1799,butmusthavebeenwrittenearlier.MadameMara(1749-1833)isnotmentionedbynameinthepoem,butbeingoneoftheprincipalsingersofthedayLambprobablyfastenedtheepithetuponherbywayofpleasantry;orshemayhavebeenreferredtointheversionofthelineswhichLambhadseen.
