DearManning，—Ihaveforbornewritingsolong（andsohaveyou，forthematterofthat），untilIamalmostashamedeithertowriteortoforbearanylonger.Butasyoursilencemayproceedfromsomeworsecausethanneglect—fromillness，orsomemishapwhichmayhavebefallenyou—Ibegintobeanxious.Youmayhavebeenburntout，oryoumayhavemarried，oryoumayhavebrokenalimb，orturnedcountryparson;anyofthesewouldbeexcusesufficientfornotingtomysupper.Iamnotsounforgivingasthenoblemanin"SaintMark."Forme，nothingnewhashappenedtome，unlessthatthepoor"Albion"diedlastSaturdayoftheworldsneglect，andwithitthefountainofmypunsischokedupforever.

AlltheLloydswonderthatyoudonotwritetotheTheyapplytomeforthecause.Relievemefromthisweightofignorance，andenablemetogiveatrulyoracularresponse.

[TheAlbionwasatthetimeofitsdeceaseownedandeditedbyJohnFenwick，afriendofLambswhomweshallmeetagain.LambtoldthestoryintheEliaessayon"Newspapers"inthefollowingpassage:—

"Recollectionsoffeelings—whichwereallthatnowremainedfromourfirstboyishheatskindledbytheFrenchRevolution，whenifweweremisled，weerredinthepanyofsome，whoareaccountedverygoodmennow—ratherthananytendencyatthistimetoRepublicandoctrines—assistedusinassumingastyleofwriting，whilethepaperlasted，consonantinnoveryunder-tonetotherightearnestfanaticismofF.Ourcuewasnowtoinsinuate，ratherthanremend，possibleabdications.Blocks，axes，Whitehalltribunals，werecoveredwithflowersofsocunningaperiphrasis—asMr.Bayessays，nevernamingthethingdirectly—thatthekeeneyeofanAttorney-GeneralwasinsufficienttodetectthelurkingsnakeamongtheThereweretimes，indeed，whenwesignedforourmoregentleman-likeoccupationunderStuart.Butwithchangeofmastersitiseverchangeofservice.Alreadyoneparagraph，andanother，aswelearnedafterwardsfromagentlemanattheTreasury，hadbeguntobemarkedatthatoffice，withaviewofitsbeingsubmittedatleasttotheattentionoftheproperLawOfficers—whenanunlucky，orratherluckyepigramfromourpen，aimedatSirJ——sM——h，whowasontheeveofdepartingforIndiatoreapthefruitsofhistacy，asF.pronouncedit，（itishardlyworthparticularising），happeningtooffendthenicesenseofLord，or，ashethendelightedtobecalled，CitizenStanhope，deprivedF.atonceofthelasthopesofaguineafromthelastpatronthathadstuckbyus;andbreakingupourestablishment，leftustothesafe，butsomewhatmortifying，neglectoftheCrownLawyers."

Thereare，however，inLambsaccount，writtenthirtyyearsafterwards，someerrors.HepassedratherfromtheAlbiontothePostthanfromthePosttotheAlbion（seethenotesinVol.II.）.SirJamesMackintoshwasnotin1801ontheeveofdepartingforIndia:hedidnotgetthepostofRecordershipofBombayuntiltwoyearslater.TheepigramprobablyreferredtoanearlierrumourofapostforhiHistasyconsistedinrecantingin1800fromtheopinionssetforthinhisVindiciaeGallicae，1791，abooksupportingtheFrenchRevolutionists，andinbeingaclosefriendofhisoldenemyBurke.IhavenotsucceededinfindingafileoftheAlbion，nor，Ibelieve，hasanyoneelse.
