GeorgeBurnettwehavealreadymet.Hewasbornprobablyin1776.HewenttoBalliol,metSoutheyandColeridgeandbecameaPantisocratist.SubsequentlyhebecameadissentingministeratYarmouth,andthenamedicalstudentatEdinburgh;andlaterhesucceededGeorgeDyerastutorinthefamilyofLordStanhope.HebecameoneofPhillipshacks,asLambslettertellsus.HisprincipalworkwastheSpecimensofEnglishProseWriters,1807,inthreevolumes,inwhichithasbeenstatedthatLambhadahand.Hediedinwantin1811.
ThereferencetoSoutheybeinginDublinisexplainedbythefactthat,throughRickman,hehadbeenappointedprivatesecretarytoMr.Corry,ChancelloroftheExchequerforIreland,atasalaryof£400.Hedidnotlongretainthepost,asitwasvexatiousandthedutiesveryirregular.
LambsnextlettertoRickman,datedNovember24,1801,containsbetternewsofDyerandreturnstothesubjectofJohnWoodvil."Dyerregularlydineswithmewhenhedoesnotgoavisiting,andbringshisshilling."Also,saysLamb,hetalksofmarrying."HehasnotforgivenmeforbetrayingtoyouhispurposeofwritinghisownLife.Hesays,thatifitoncespreads,somanypeoplewillexpectandwishtohaveaplaceinit,thatheissureheshalldisobligeallhisfriends."
Another,undated,lettertoRickmanshouldprobablyehere-abouts,sayingthatDyerhasbeenlentahouseatEnfieldfullofbooks,whereheisatworkonhisPoems.
HereperhapsshouldealetterfromLambtoRobertLloyd,returningtoJeremyTaylor,anddeprecatingaselectionfromhisworks,whichRobertLloydhadsuggestedthatLambshouldmake.(In1805BasilMontagu,afterwards,ifnotnow,afriendofLambs,publishedavolumeofSelectionsfromtheWorksofTaylor,Etc.)LambsaysthatManningandColeridgeareintown,andheismakingathoroughalterationinthestructureofhisplay(JohnWoodvil)forpublication.
HereperhapsshouldeafurtherundatedlettertoRickmaninwhichLambsaysthatthereceiptof£50foranolddebthasmadeitpossibletoprintJohnWoodvil.Dyer,hesays,is"themostunmanageableofGodscreatures."Burnettisinaverybadwayagain.FenwickspaperThePloughhasbeeaweekly.Godwinisnotyetmarried.Fell,Godwinsshadow,iswritingaedy:"AnOwlmakingaPunwouldbenobademblemoftheunnaturalattempt."InapostscriptLambsaysthathehassincereadtheplayanditisnotbad:"Whoknows,butOwlsdomakePunswhentheyhootbymoonshine."ThebestnewsisthatLambhopestobeatheatricalcriticfortheMorningPost.
HereshouldealettertoRickmandatedJanuary9,1802,theprincipalnewsinwhichisthatGeorgeDyerisconsortingwiththeEarlofBuchan,the"eccentricbiographerofFletcherofSaltoun,"andhasbroughthimtoseeLamb."Iwantathome,butMarywaswashing—aprettypickletoreceiveanEarlin!Lordhavemercyuponus!aLordinmygarret!MyutmostambitionwassometimeorothertoreceiveaSecretary.Well,IamtobreakfastwiththismadLordonSunday."LambreferstohisarticleinthePostonCookes"RichardIII."
